Lisa Salzer is as far removed from the typical jewellery designer as it’s possible to be. A world away from the fresh-from-college design rebel crafting unwearable works from her kitchen. the quietly confident New Yorker, 28, is equal parts shrewd entrepreneur and talented craftswoman. Inspired by her grandmother Elizabeth Rock Frost, who managed a jewellery business aged 21. Under the banner Lulu Frost (Lulu is her nickname, Frost is her mother’s maiden name), she sold £25 belts and necklaces to her friends while studying art history at college. Seven years on, her business has just moved out of its quite studio in New York’s Soho to former department store on 20th on Broadway. Add to that Pop Art-ish glass designs, her reinvented Art Deco pieces, her 100 Years collection (just launched on Net-A-Porter, every piece has at least one original element from 1860 to 1960 embedded in it) and arrange she produces for J Crew and you can see why ‘Jewellery designer’ only starts to cover it.

Salzer is in London to promote Code, her first fine-jewellery range featuring numbers crafted into rings and earrings in plain gold or studded with diamonds. ‘Numbers can be so symbolic, so personal’.

Code is the extension of an idea Salzer had back in 2005 when she discovered thousands of numbers and letters discarded by New York’s Plaza Hotel after a refit. It sparked the Plaza Collection - thick bronze chains with ribbons and occasional crystals, dangling large letters and number pendants. The same number are now replicated in miniature to form Code, available exclusively to Matches.

Take your jeans and T-shirt into date mode by adding amazing earrings, and your all ready to go out.
