Just read an article about this deal,it has been around since 2002!
The old deal which was mostly for major label and Major Indie artist.
Which the label would give an advance for the master recordings,
promotions, marketing etc! What ever was left over was for the artist!
Depending on the budget and your points deal it was all an artist would ever see!
Artists would tour to get paid as well as merchandise and any other deals
like branding,movie deals licensing etc!
Artists would have to have out side deals going on to make there money.
If it is a big tour the artist could make good money. The artist would tour to promote the record for the label that is how they would make back their money! But times have changed
Records are not selling due to downloads and weak economy so record companies have come up with a new way
to stay afloat! The 360 Deal... what is this deal? Bluntly they get a piece everything
you do whether or not they have a hand in it!
The 360 deal is not for every body and most artists who do not attract major label attention
will not see this anyways! But for those who do this means they pay for the album, pay
for the tour/video and expect a piece of the profits. Including brand sponsorship, merchandise,
licensing deals.movie deals you get the picture. They want a piece of everything even if they
did not have a hand in getting the artists these deals. Their reasoning is they break you out
so they should get a percentage of every deal you make off of their initial investment!
Artist never made much on the old model that was a pimp's deal and so is this one as Bob Marley would say Pimper's paradise not much
different if you ask me! I do believe major labels are Pimps..there I said it arrest me!
