The Recording Process
Whether you have a home studio or rent studio time there is always a process
you have to go through! For me it's renting studio time a procedure I find
a necessary . Would prefer home studio but that takes a bit of engineer knowledge
depending on the studio set up. As a songwriter/artist and some times producer
it is important to be completely prepared. Be it programing the sounds or a vocalist
preparing to sing you must be well rehearsed!
I get a little anxious when I prepare for the studio I want to be at my best!
I go over the song over and over again making sure I pick the right key
for the performance. I prefer to sing the song from top to bottom without
piecing it together which is the norm in most recording process! But if I can
produce the song in one take without the lyrics then the process of over dubbing
which is doubling up on the main track to make it thicker would be a faster process!
The vocals alone could take up to three hours minimum, including lead vocals,Background vocals, harmonies and ad lib's. The best way to do this is to warm up first, some do vocal exercise, some have a bottle of vodka to relax the throat muscles,I do the honey and lime
sometimes just water and sing the song a couple of times in a different key to warm up!
The late Great Michael Jackson would go into the studio prepared to do an album with no lyric sheets. He was a master at that very professional all artists should be that prepared
it makes the work much faster and fun!
I am preparing to record a new song with an environment I am used too!
It is vital to be comfortable in your environment it will allow the best vocals
possible! The process is alot of work but it could also be alot of fun enjoy
your time in the studio and make the best possible recording you can make!
Recently my song 'Do what you feel' was chosen to be in the documentary
'Trash Dance' to be shown at the SXSW Film and music conference this week!
