The Legal End Of Things!
A few yrs ago I read the book "The Real Deal" By Deana Schwartz
Quite insightful. The most important parts were "Creating a Buzz"
As an indie artist you must create a buzz by any means necessary
to Achieve your objectives! How you do it is up to you no rules
if there is any break them! Another section I read which caught my attention
was lawyers and how important they are!
There are different types of Lawyers I gathered!
Those that shop and negotiate deals called a finders
fee deal the kind I like. Then those that read over contracts
you received and give their opinion. The latter can be expensive
Lawyers usually charge by the hour unless you get probono
not likely these days unless your case gets media attention
for being ripped off you going to have to pay!
Songwriters associations are a good start they have
Lawyers on staff for a membership fee per year
you can get a lawyer at your beck and call for a reasonable fare!
Student Lawyers maybe good to look into although their rates
maybe more than the songwriters association rate so look around!
The truth is Lawyers are a necessary evil. For every contract
you will have to sign be managers contract, agent, recording contract, songwriters,
Publishers contract. You will need a lawyer! Nothing is done without contracts!
The industry secret if you got a lawyer your a dangerous person!
They can save you heartache and grief trust me on that!
I was given a Publishing contract to look over I passed it on to My Lawyer (Yeah I got one!)
My Initial feeling was it looks good but needed input. The reality is if I signed it I would be
signing away my copyright for the rest of my life Never get it back I repeat Never!
This is one contract you can never get out of you can get out of a bad marriage but
never get out of a contract that says perpetuity which means forever Beware!!
