The comeback Chokers

The neck piece returned, but this time round, it’s more subversive than Sloane.
They were last spotted in the early nineties – Velvet, snug to the throat, riding high at the apex of statement jewellery. The choker, despite having one of fashion’s most unforgiving names and lingering on sartorial disaster lists for the past two decades, is back.
Gone are the layering of Princess Di pearls and the cameo centrepieces. In their place come thick bands of black Perspex at Michael Kors, gold-encrusted paper chains perched atop pussy-bow blouses at YSL, and leather collars studded with sliver paillettes at Alexander McQueen. In other words, they’re tougher, more graphic and modern and, in many ways, much meaner than their King’s Road forebears. What’s more, there’s a whiff of something a little subversive about jewellery this close to your throat that blends ever so nicely with the season’s fondness for all things fetish.
Earrings will cause distraction so keep the choker your only adornment, or nestle inside a collar of a crisp work shirt. Since choker is characterised by its geometric simplicity, think of it as Lavin’s Alber Elbaz does, as a cuff for the neck, though the necklines need to pay respect and tone down. It’s time for jewellery’s comeback kid to be in the limelight.
