Polonecks – Chic and cosy or sartorial strangulation?

Polonecks – Chic and cosy or sartorial strangulation?

Ever since its adoption by Noel Coward in the Twenties, the humble polo neck (originally made for labourers) has become fashion shorthand to say to the world that it’s wearer is complex and individual. The New York beatniks and the Rive Gauche existentialists all relate to the simple yet powerful allure of the poloneck as the international uniform of dark cool. A poloneck, to me, says “I am clever, I am deep, and I am different.”

In terms of basics, it’s a fashion code that works. With one quick pull over the head, its wearer is properly dressed and ready to work; creative work, too – have you ever noticed it’s the uniform of composers, fashion and art directors?
American Vogue’s Grace Coddington adores poloneck, as does her colleague Tonne Goodman. Both are fine ambassadors of the look and gravitate towards it when looking for chic comfort. Tuck it in with a great pair of trousers, and you can ramble from day to evening if you pull back your hair and add a sweep of red lipstick.
Covering up leaves more to the imagination, a well-fitted polo neck sweater is perfect in revealing enough of your silhouette; it hugs and clings to every line and curve. Remember Audrey Hepburn shimmying in a nightclub in Paris with skinny cigarette trousers and her black poloneck in ‘Funny Face’. Now tell me the poloneck isn’t alluring?

The best should feel like a second skin – my heart skipped a beat when I saw those at Celine and Jil Sander this autumn. So ban those childhood memories of polonecks your mother use to wear, and the itchy woolly ones you were dressed in as a pre-teen. Now the poloneck is all grown up.
