The day in the life of an Independent Artist part 3

Today I want to talk about when should an artist go for it!
Going for usually entails making a decision at some point in your life that this is what you want do do professionally! This decision is neither easy or a simple one!
1st off you must access your strengths and weaknesses, do yo understand
the business part of the music business? Which is the most important part!
Do you understand contracts and the terms of each one? Do you have a team
eg...Manager,Publicist,Label,Producer etc!Do you consider music a hobby
or do you take it seriously if you choose as a hobby then it does not matter
the type of music you do for it is just for fun! But if is to make a living then
you have to understand the trends and commercial appeal potential of your music!

But when do you go for it? Is the question you should ask yourself! Do you have
responsibilities eg...Family,car payments, mortgage or just life problems
that get in the way? The earlier you go for it the better right? Yes and no
if you are a young artist in their teens or twenties the industry is always
on the look out for the young artists for marketing reasons! The young Artists they
can get a lot of mileage with and use up! Most of these artists just want to become stars
and have no idea about the business side and are usually used up and washed up
at an early age! They usually don't have much responsibility's and have investors behind them. That is a good thing in terms of investment but lack life experiences and true
business knowledge of the game!

Those with responsibility's have to put their dreams on hold for sometime
it seems. The industry is not as kind with artists over 30 or those who
couldn't go for it earlier everybody as bills to pay! But no matter what age you go
for it there will be lots of sacrifice broken relationships lost friends along the way. If they are truly your friend they should stand by you no matter what! But most of all you should be armed with knowledge for knowledge is the secret for success!

A great book to read is "All you need to know about the music business"
By Donald S. Passman An entertainment Lawyer. A great read he tells you all about contracts the terms of deals what to look for what not to do. A must read for the serious artist, writer, producer ,Agents and the like!
