We Are Avengers
If anyone recalls the ‘trip-hop’ scene that emanated from Bristol in the early to mid 1990’s, or even if you don’t recall it, it’s very much worth checking out the band from Nottingham called We Are Avengers.
The current line-up of We Are Avengers came together last year, although the band has been in existence since 2008. They comprise of Emily Martin (vocals), Vince Vega (sampler, DJ decks) and Tim the Rambler on bass. Formed in Nottingham and play the vast majority of their gigs locally but have also played in London.
To label them purely as ‘trip-hop’ though would be somewhat mis-selling their sound. Live, they draw on a wide variety of influences such as reggae, dub, break-beats, as well as the afore-mentioned ‘trip-hop’ band such as Portishead, Massive Attack and Lamb, and this is rounded off by the soulful voice of the lead signer, Emily. The influences the band cite range from Pearl Jam to DJ Shadow via the likes of George Clinton and Al Green. As well as their own material, they also do excellent, soulful covers of Stars (Simply Red) and Never Gonna Give You Up (Rick Astley).
They’re currently unsigned, but they’ve been gaining a fair amount of interest locally over the past 12-18 months. Hopefully word of this exciting outfit will spread once their debut single ‘Trouble’ is released in October, keep your eyes on your local gig listings as the soulful, trip-hop sound of We Are Avengers will soon be heading your way!!! Further information can be found at their Facebook site: www.facebook.com/pages/We-Are-Avengers, or their MySpace site: http://www.myspace.com/entertheavengers
