Style Icons in Music- part one- The Roaring 20s and the Flappers
First of all, welcome to the first in a series of articles which will depict key influences on fashion through the medium of music and musicians, which will feature key style icons from each decade who are either musicians, or, in this case, inspired by a style of music.
Probably the first influences of music in fashion came about in the 1920s, also known as the roaring 20s, in the form of jazz music. While there was not a particular icon in this decade, jazz music directly influenced fashion, in the form of the flapper girls.
The flapper style of fashion appeared in 1926, in a time of rapid change in women’s fashion. Hair became shorter, women had bare legs, and androgyny was rife. These styles were influenced by jazz music as the clothes were all designed to be worn to go out and listen to music & go dancing.

The chemise dress was a typical look for the flapper girls to wear. The loose fabric and the shorter hemlines made the dress ideal for dancing and listening to music.

Another popular style was the drop shoulder dress, another ideal style for the flappers to wear. Accessories came in the form of feathers, beaded bags, hats and pearls.
The end of the flappers came in the 1930s, due to the great depression, and through the thirties, music was not seen as a big influence on fashion, instead films had a huge impact.
Next in the series will be the style icons of the 1940s, hope you enjoy it.
