Style Icons in Music Part 2: Sinatra and Swing

Style Icons in Music Part 2: Sinatra and Swing

The 1940s saw one of the first musical style icons ever, in the form of Frank Sinatra. Sinatra was a notable singer in big band and swing music, which dominated the 1940s, as it was upbeat and cheerful, and for many a distraction from the war. Along with this music came dancing; and the utility style of clothing was perfect for this.

Another massive item in the 1940s was the Zoot Suit, which was directly influenced by swing music stars such as Sinatra.

Due to the war, this style was seen as one of the only styles in the 40s, as people could not afford to be extravagant with their style.

Swing music and the style to go with it eventually died out, though it's influences are still seen today, most notably in the film 'The Mask'.

Next time: The 1950's, which will be a long post as there were a lot of changes in this decade.
