From deckchairs to beach balls, the quintessential British beach holiday has always been a stripy affair but, this spring/summer 2011, these classic stripes also provide a fantastic spring board for you seaside wardrobe. From Sonia Rykiel to Marc by Marc Jacobs, this summer’s nautical-inspired bikinis were given fresh energy in bright orange or yellow hoops, while cover ups were also given a lift in this bold pattern.

Thin lines of white and blue at MaxMara and Margaret Howell offered a timeless option, while Jonathan Saunders’ neon striped skirts supplied a more striking alternative. Many of his pieces cleverly combined their stripes with elegant florals – another print that was making waves at the seaside this season.

Floral swimwear on the catwalk ranged from the subtlest hints of Thakoon to the ye-catching one-piece at Antonio Marras, at Nanette Kepore and Peter Som, traditional high-waisted bikinis got an injection of fun when covered in neon flowers but, for the definitive British take on this trend, look to D&G – where Liberty-style prints lent an understated chic to both swimwear and cover-ups.

This season is all about the classic shape, a one-piece or a high-waisted bikini, accessorized with wedges and a straw hat – as seen at Prada and Marc Jacobs. This means the only decision you have to make is which pattern you are going to pick.
