The 1950’s: the decade of firsts.

The 1950’s: the decade of firsts.

The 1950’s was the decade that started youth’s major influence by music. In the 1950’s, there was a new type of consumer: the teenager. Teenagers were heavily influenced by film, TV, and music, and this influence led into their style too. Easily the biggest musical influence on style in the 50s was Elvis, who influenced the hugely popular ‘Teddy Boy’ look. The Teddy Boys wore the still popular drainpipe trousers, as well as drape jackets, white shirts and skinny ties, a look still popular today. Shoes came in the form of brogues, Oxfords and Brothel Creepers, a look recently revived in men’s footwear. Teddy Girls were also created from this trend, wearing pencil skirts, rolled up jeans, boater hats, drape jackets, poodle skirts, espadrilles and ponytails, looks still popular today.
The Teddy Boys and Elvis lead the way for style iconds to really be from music, and started the trend for music directly influencing style. They also lead to one of the biggest style rivalries in history, which will be discussed fully next week, when we come to the 1960s.
