Debbie Reynolds Auction, which is known for the sale of authentic historical memorabilia, is slated to put on sale several such iconic and historical items, on the June 18th this year. Carrying the energy, and a strong legacy, these costumes are bound to be on the wishlist of a number of bidders.
Some of the iconic pieces of cinematic history are as follows:
1. Marylyn Monroe’s halter neck dress from The Seven Year Itch
When Marylyn Monroe is remembered, the first picture coming to most minds would be the iconic scene in the movie “Seven Year Itch,” where a sudden gust of wind sends her halter neck dress flying up with her legs on display. This very halter-neck number is now stated to go on sale at the auction, and is most probably the item of highest value, with estimated values between $1 to $ 2 million. On further research, this dress has been found to have more pleats and intricate hand-stitched designs than what meets the eye. What was also unknown is that the design had a built-in bra in the dress, to further accentuate the look of the cinematic icon.
2. Katherine Hepburn’s High-Neck Ascot Gown in Mary of Scotland
Katherine Hepburn, throughout her illustrious career, had been known to have one of the strongest presences on screen. Mainly due to her talent and evergreen beauty, Katherine Hepburn also made a mark by donning some of the iconic dresses of her era. One of these dresses is the special high-neck Ascot gown, designed by Oscar-winning dress designer, Cecil Beaton. This gown is known to have some of the most intricate and complicated stitch work, and the hat has some breathtaking stitches. This is sure to be one of central points of attraction at the auction, for takers who wish to add the historical gown to their collection.
3. Charlie Chaplin’s signature Bowler Hat
The man was an icon, and so were his accessories. This signature item is the bowler hat, which Charlie Chaplin was seen wearing in most in his movies, such as The Tramp. His presence was such that even a simple hat has now turned into a collector’s item.
4. Judy Garland’s Ruby Shoes
As iconic the movie was, the costumes and accessories were of equal iconicity. One of them is the ruby encrusted slippers that Judy Garland wore in the movie “The Wizard of Oz.” Created in limited numbers, only five of these are still deemed to be surviving.
5. Elizabeth Taylor’s headgear in Cleopatra
Since most actors are recognized for their most iconic roles, Elizabeth Taylor too was known for her larger than life portrayal of the Egyptian queen, Cleopatra in the movie by the same name. The headgear from the costume is also a part of this sale, which shall eventually add style to the buyer’s collection.
6. Vivian Leigh’s headgear in Gone With the Wind
“Gone With the Wind,” stands as an icon in cinematic history, especially for being a classic romantic movie. Vivian Leigh, the lead actress of this movie, sported an elaborate head gear, in order to gain Clarke Gable’s attention. This headgear is now a part of the upcoming Debbie Reynolds Auction.
7. Julie Andrews Blouse in The Sound of Music
Another landmark movie in genre of family entertainers, “The Sound of Music,” had Julie Andrews portray the character of a children’s’ nanny. The movie was the winner of several awards, and Julie Andrews got many accolades for her work. The blouse that she had donned in the movie is now on sale at the auction, even though conservative in design it may be.
8. Charlton Heston’s Tunic and Robe, in Ben Hur
“Ben Hur” was known as and still continues to be known as one of the greatest chapters in movie making, because of the flawless acting and cinematography. Charlton Heston had portrayed the character of Judah, which brought to light his acting talent. The robe-cum-tunic which was worn by Heston, to portray the historic character, is now on sale at the auction.
9. Marylyn Monroe’s red dress from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
Monroe portrayed the role of an aspiring performing artist in the movie “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.” Her character sported a classic red sequined gown, which is also on sale at the auction. Taking into account the dress’s original wearer, this red dress is sure to be on everybody’s wish-list.
10. Claudette Cobert’s golden gown in Cleopatra
Cleopatra was known more for Elizabeth Taylor’s work than that of Claudette Cobert. However, this movie had Cobert wear a golden shimmer gown with emerald embellishments, designed by Trevor Benton, which became a fashion milestone in that era. This dress too is up for auction.
