Guards: Vintage Vibes with Musical Integrity

Guards: Vintage Vibes with Musical Integrity

The music draws on the innocent sounds of the 1950’s and somehow mixes them with the grunge style of the 90s, which is kind of awesome. Mixing eras and styles to create something new that still feels familiar. In the Los Angeles hills, Richie Follin is putting the finishing touches to his debut album. His computer is only programmed to make music, and the phone (a dodgy mobile that’s almost out of signal) is emitting distorted noises.
Since 2010, Richie has been working as Guards – a rather technology-shy-one-man-band. The songs are uncompromisingly raw, harnessing pessimistic heartache to craft tracks about birth, death and any emotional dissatisfaction you might experience in between Vintage guitar riffs reverberate around a chilling organ to make for a classic but exciting sound.
“It’s less about thinking what people would want and more about what is a good song. It took me out of my box and gave me freedom”.
