What’s Hot and How to wear it…. The trouser suits
Sometimes fashion can surprise you, just when you thought you have seen it all. Take this season. Minimalism, check. Maxi skirt, on it. Return of the flat shoes, no problem. Then there comes a pastel pink suit trouser suit by Stella McCartney. Err, come again?
To be fair, the trouser suit has been making a sneaky come back clearly articulated on the S/S catwalks. From white and floaty by Celine to oversized by Dries Van Noten and minimalist at MaxMara. But Stella’s version in pale pink, with a high-waisted cropped trousers. Say what? Yet, somehow, this look is just right for now. Here’s why….
IT’s FEMININE! But cool girl feminine, not namby-pamby pastel cutesy. There’s a bit of old 1970s glamour and hints of 1980s rude girl, also a dollop of early 1990s androgyny (think Calvin Klein, Helmut Lang). Throw in some new minimalism right now and you’ve got yourself a whole lot of references that somehow translate into effortless, new-season chic.
Why now you say… Well, it’s partly to do with the whole minimalism thing moving on and evolving. We want to work the understated, cleanliness look spearheaded by Phoebe Philo for Celine, we really do. A bit too masculine. Call this a softening up of that look, an injection of pretty. That’s why it’s so appealing for now and so very wearable. Add to that the feeling in the air that pastels feel just right again – a move on from all the leather ‘n’ studs ‘n’ rock chick attitude that has filtered down to every high street in the land and is, frankly, looking a little grubby around the edges (especially for the fresh spring look). It’s Alexa Chung, as opposed to Kate Moss, if you will. A little bit retro, pretty with an edge and oozing retro cool all at the same time.
How to wear it…. Any which way you want really. But here are a few pointers to get you started. Worn as a suit with summer wedges and possibly one of those floppy wide- brimmed hats that are everywhere this season and you will have the ideal spring wedding ensemble that will make all those floaty, floral number look, well a bit floaty and floral. Team the jacket with a crisp, white shirt or vest, or the trousers with a light-coloured blazer. Add a pair of cute heels and you’re office-ready and fashion-forward at the same time. Wear with a hi-top sneaker if you’re really hip and live in East London, or platforms if you don’t and you’ve got a party/gallery/opening/dinner/cocktail/Ibiza clubbing outfit that will look properly fabulous, sexy and cool. In shorts, with a bit of thought and a fresh eye, this really is a wear anywhere / everywhere ensemble.
