Andy Samberg and his Lonely Island bros added a touch of silliness to an otherwise civilized and humble (oh, Charlie Sheen) Emmy Awards ceremony Sunday night. Betwixt "Modern Family" and "Downton Abbey" (Masterpiece Theater is still on!) wins, the comedy trio took to the stage for a medley of some of their finer hits of the past year.
Wearing matching cater-waiter outfits, Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccona and guest Michael Bolton kicked off by singing "Jack Sparrow." Much like the "Saturday Night Live" version, the hook-delivering Bolton changed into a pirate ensemble while the boys were rapping.
Next, the medley deployed some TV magic when the Island's hit "3-Way (The Golden Rule)" began. With Samberg indisposed, Justin Timberlake MIA and Lady Gaga off being Lady Gaga, "Office" star Ed Helms and John Stamos donned the Colour Me Badd-inspired garb for a vocal tag-teaming of Maya Rudolph, standing in for Gaga wearing a platinum wig.
And lastly, "I Just Had Sex" got its moment in the sun, with Akon performing the di-riculous lines about being super stoked and surprised about getting sex. As the medley closed out, a banner reading "#1 Sex Champions" was held proudly in front of a huge American flag.
Elsewhere in music-related Emmys news, Gwyneth Paltrow took home a guest actress in a comedy series award for her turn on "Glee" and the "In Memoriam" segment solidified the need for a moratorium on Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" on network television. Head on over to The Hollywood Reporter for some serious Emmy coverage.
